Bear Report

New Bear Regs for Hikers

2/11/2012 - By Donn (scared of bears) Tisch

Bear Regulations on Appalachian trail.

There are new regulations for the Appalachian trail concerning Bears. Beginning on March 1 if you are hiking the trail in the Chattahoochee National Forest will be required to bring a special Bear resistant canister to contain your food and other personal items. This new regulation is been issued by the USDA  that is responsible for public safety concerns.

These bear canisters are designed to trap orders inside to eliminate interaction between bears and human hikers along the trail. It is our opinion that the cost of these canisters far outweighs the hazards brought on by meeting up a hungry bear while out there in the wild.

It might be a good idea if you do a lot of overnight hiking in the area to acquire these containers regardless of regulations for your own personal safety.

It has been reported by a forest officials that encounters are on the increase in recent years in this area where the new regulations have come into effect.

So far this is the only section of the trail or any trail the in area that we are aware of that has such a regulation. But it is always wise to call ahead and check in For more information on the exact location the new regulations effect, you can go to their website at   www.fs.usda.gov/confs or contact the Blue Ridge Rangers district office at area code 706-745 – 6928.
